The NXP's capacitive sensor includes the single-channel PCF8883, the dual-channel PCA8886, and the 8-channel PCF8885 and PCA8885 devices. A single PCA8886 device with dual channels can support up to three sensors. A single PCF8885 or PCA8885 device with eight channels can support up to 28 sensors, and with two devices up to 64 sensors can be supported.

Lowest Power Capacitive Sensors with Auto-Calibration
Compared to resistive-based sensing, which reacts to changes in resistance created by the touch of a bare finger, capacitive sensing presents several advantages. With capacitive sensing technology, no actual contact is required, which means there's no need to press the sensing area. This gives rise to proximity sensing, which supports control at a distance, and lets the system react to approaching objects. Capacitive sensing also works with the touch of something other than skin such as a gloved hand or a mechanical pointer, and can be configured to respond to events that generate a predefined change in capacitance.

All four devices can be configured as touch or proximity sensors, and can be used for the most common human interface formats, including button/switch. All four are also easily connected to a microcontroller. The 8-channel PCF8885 and PCA8885 devices support slider, touchscreen, trackpad, and wheel applications. They include a Fast-mode I2C (Fm+) interface and can operate as a slave receiver or transmitter. The PCF8883 and PCA8886 have digital on/off outputs to indicate when the input capacitance changes. In applications that don't have a microcontroller, the PCF8883 and PCA8886 can be configured to use push-button, toggle, or pulse outputs.
